How Macbeth Changes Through the Play
How Macbeth Changes Throughout the Play
Macbeth changed throughout the play because of various obstacles he faced. He was a loving husband and was royal to his country. At the start of the play, Macbeth is a loyal, courageous servant of the King of Scotland. Sergeant says, “For Brave Macbeth- well he deserves that name--Disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution.”(Shakespeare,I,ii,16)But he is a man who harbours an ambition for power. He is both noble and brave in his defence for the King in battle, he is rewarded for his actions. Macbeth has an encounter with the witches and his life changed. Once the witches show him his future/prophecy, he has become obsessed of speeding up the process of coming into power. Lady Macbeth showed him that he can be the new King of Scotland by killing the King(Duncan), so the blame will be onto the King's sons. By doing this Macbeth evil deed causes him to suffer from fear and sorrow, which leads to even more evil crimes. Once Macbeth seizes power through violence and murder, his life is darkened with the crime of regicide, that he has killed a rightful, good and much loved king. By the end Macbeth can't take risks of Banquo and his son, so he orders two murders to kill them. Now Macbeth takes no thought in killing people, he just does it. He has lost his humanity, he has no morality governing his actions. He thinks that he will be able to maintain his power through murder and intimidation. After he has killed he regrets to do so the end Macbeth says, “If thy speech be sooth, I care not if thou dost for me as much. I pull in resolution, and begin to doubt the equivocation of the fiend that kes like the truth”(V,VI,38)Macbeth is finally scared that what the witches told him is wrong, so he is questions their prophecies and is ready to die, but die fighting. All in all, Macbeth Changed throughout the play from a man who was loved from what he did for his country, to person who went the wrong way to get his place in power, and exceeded that to kill people even after because he was afraid to be knocked off the platform of being king.
